The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the United States’ largest philanthropy focused solely on health, is dedicated “to improving the health and well-being of all in America.”
We partnered with RWJF for well over a decade on national campaigns such as Last Acts that created strategies with national thought leaders to improve care and caring at the end of life and the nursing shortage, where we served as the communications consultant for the nursing team.
We also facilitated coalition meetings across the country in support of the Institute of Medicine’s Report, the Future of Nursing. These projects helped Sojourn gain invaluable perspectives on grantmaking, managing a national campaign around a complex, taboo topic (death), and bringing unusual partners together to develop state-wide coalitions to improve the nursing shortage.
The Initiative on the Future of Nursing, administered by AARP, is rooted in the recommendations of the 2010 landmark report, The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health from the Institute of Medicine (IOM), which The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation funded.
A key strategy of the Initiative created state-wide coalitions to implement the recommendations of the IOM report. Sojourn Communications designed and facilitated state strategic planning coalition meetings and regional summits on education to get buy-in on the report and establish a critical path for addressing nurse education and retention impediments.
Using primary research, we also developed a communications campaign to counter telemarketing fraud that hits far too many unassuming consumers.
New Health Partnerships, a program of IHI, applied the successes learned from its hospital quality improvement initiatives to the office practice.
The program believed that patients and families could transform care for people managing chronic conditions by building an online community that was in partnership with healthcare providers.
Sojourn cultivated strategic partnerships among various influential providers, consumers and family, and quality improvement organizations to increase the use of New Health Partnerships’ collection of collaborative self-management support tools and resources.
The Johns Hopkins Hospital hired Sojourn to coach members of their executive leadership team. We are also a key team member for the Mindful Ethical Practice and Resilience Academy (MEPRA) that designs and facilitates a series of workshops for front-line nurses to transform their moral distress into moral resilience. MEPRA has gained national attention due to its successful research results.
Capital Hospice has provided expert, compassionate, end-of-life care in the Washington DC metropolitan area since 1977 and continues to serve as one of the oldest, largest, and most experienced hospice care programs in the United States.
Grateful for the care they had provided Nancy’s mother, Sojourn Communications facilitated a series of pro bono staff retreats in preparation for their 30th-anniversary celebration and conducted community focus groups to better understand what matters to those facing hospice services.
Addressing the issue of nurse burnout, we are communications strategists for a four-year grant, the Resilient Nurses Initiative: Maryland. The goal of the grant is to build nurses’ resilience, ethical practice and increase their well-being to help sustain the nursing workforce and bridge the gap between academics and practice.
The Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing and the Berman Institute of Bioethics convened a national nursing summit that created a blueprint for 21st-century nursing ethics in the summer of 2014. Sojourn designed and facilitated the highly interactive and productive meeting with 50 national nursing leaders.
The Bloomberg School of Public Health’s office of external affairs partnered with Sojourn Communications to facilitate round table conversations to determine alumni’s current and future levels of engagement in the school’s activities.
NCOA is a national network of organizations and individuals dedicated to improving the health and independence of older persons, increasing their continuing contributions to communities, society and future generations, and building caring communities. Sojourn Communications provided editorial oversight for the development of consumer-friendly fact sheets on aging and the elderly.
The National PACE Association represents and works to advance the efforts of the more than 40 Programs of All-inclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE) across the United States. PACE programs coordinate and provide all needed preventive, primary, acute and long term care services so that older individuals can continue living in the community.
Sojourn Communications worked with NPA to research target audiences, craft a compelling message platform, and develop a national communications plan.
CHD was founded on the idea that design could be used to improve patient outcomes in hospitals and other healthcare environments. Sojourn created a dissemination plan for a series of CHD white papers to enhance the uptake of their teachings, including media outreach/media training, a speakers’ bureau program, and targeted direct mail.
The National Family Planning and Reproductive Health Association (NFPRHA) is a vital membership organization representing the nation’s dedicated family planning providers—nurses, nurse practitioners, health center directors and other key healthcare providers.
NFPRHA serves its members by providing advocacy, education and training for those in the family planning and reproductive healthcare field. In addition to designing and facilitating a team building and strategic planning retreat, Sojourn Communications helped NFPRHA develop and implement a comprehensive communications strategy.
Halcyon, a new kind of nonprofit organization, lifts up innovators and creators who seek to make the world a better place, giving them the tools and opportunities they need to bring their ideas to life. I’ve been honored to provide pro bono leadership coaching and resilience workshops to their Fellows and staff.

Inova Health System
Nancy served as Director of Communications for Inova Health System, a non-profit network of hospitals, outpatient services, assisted living and long-term care facilities, and healthcare centers.
Holding oversight and collaborative relationships with the communications directors in all entities of the System, she was also responsible for promoting to Northern Virginia the value of its non-profit status.

Nancy served as a legislative correspondent for a US Senator.
Capitol Hill Hospital, Medlantic Healthcare/Medstar
As Director of Communications and Administrator of the Sports Medicine Center within Capitol Hill Hospital, Nancy gained the first-hand experience on how small hospitals that are part of a large healthcare system operate and the valuable role they play to enhance the breadth of services the network provides to the community.
