The Initiative on the Future of Nursing is rooted in the recommendations of the 2010 landmark report, The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health from the Institute of Medicine (IOM) and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF). A key strategy of the initiative was the creation of statewide coalitions to implement the recommendations of the IOM report. Sojourn Communications was brought on to design and facilitate state strategic planning coalition meetings as well as regional summits on education.
The Bell Multicultural High School, in Washington, D.C., provides multilingual, academic, career development, and economic support to its student population of 714 immigrants, refugees and inner-city youths. It recognizes the importance of addressing students' social and economic needs, while focusing on individual learning styles to give students marketable skills to succeed in the work force or in post-secondary education. At a critical time for Bell Multicultural, Sojourn facilitated a board retreat that engaged leaders to re-examine their strategic plan and develop the necessary activities to reach their operational goals.
Capital Hospice has provided expert, compassionate, end-of-life care in the Washington DC metropolitan area since 1977. As one of the oldest, largest, and most experienced hospice care programs in the United States, they serve patients and their loved ones in our local community. For Capital Hospice, Sojourn Communications facilitated a series of staff retreats in preparation of their 30th anniversary celebration and conducted community focus groups to help find the heart of what matters to those facing hospice services.
In 2010 the National PAINS Project, a program of the Center for Practical Bioethics was a national initiative to access the capacity and readiness of individual leaders and organizations to collaborate for the purpose of developing a national strategic plan to improve the treatment of chronic pain. In anticipation of the Institute of Medicine’s report on pain in the U.S., Sojourn was engaged to provide strategic counsel, communications support as well as to design the necessary infrastructure for its recommendations.
The Center for Advanced Illness Coordinated Care (CAICC) is a nonprofit educational organization dedicated to integrating advanced illness/end-of-life care into mainstream medicine. For CAICC, Sojourn promoted to healthcare professionals and consumers an online course on end-of-life care based on its groundbreaking, 15-part newspaper series, "Finding Our Way: Living with Death in America."
CHD was founded on the idea that design could be used to improve patient outcomes in healthcare environments. Today it continues its mission to transform healthcare environments for a healthier, safer world through design research, education, and advocacy. Sojourn created a dissemination plan for a series of CHD white papers to enhance the uptake of their teachings, including media outreach/media training, a speakers’ bureau program, and targeted direct mail.
C-TAC works so that all Americans with advanced illness, especially the sickest and most vulnerable, will receive comprehensive, high-quality, person- and family- centered care that is consistent with their goals and values and honors their dignity. Sojourn Communications helped design and facilitated its kick-off conference of 50+ invited healthcare leaders.
GWish works toward a more compassionate system of healthcare by restoring the heart and humanity of medicine through research, education and policy work focused on bringing increased attention to the spiritual needs of patients, families and healthcare professionals. Sojourn provided communications, strategic and facilitation support.
New Health Partnerships, a program of the Institute for Healthcare Improvement, shared the successes learned from its hospital quality improvement initiatives to the office practice. An online community built and supported by individuals and organizations believed that patients and families, in partnership with healthcare providers, could transform care for people managing chronic conditions. Sojourn Communications cultivated strategic partnerships among a variety of influential provider, consumer and family, and quality improvement organizations to increase the use of New Health Partnerships' collection of collaborative self-management support tools and resources.
The Bloomberg School of Public Health’s office of external affairs will convene alumni to determine current and future levels of engagement in the school’s activities. Sojourn Communications will facilitate round table conversations with select alums, followed by the creation of a plan that best implements lessons learned.
The School of Nursing and the Berman Institute of Bioethics convened a national nursing summit that created a blueprint for 21st century nursing ethics in the summer of 2014. Sojourn designed and facilitated the highly interactive and productive meeting with 50 national nursing leaders.
Partnership for Solutions, led by Johns Hopkins University and The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, works to improve the care and quality of life for the more than 125 million Americans with chronic health conditions. To offer new insights in creating better lives for people with chronic conditions, Sojourn Communications worked with Partnership for Solutions to create a Capitol Hill conference for policymakers, healthcare leaders, and researchers.
For more than 30 years, NARAL Pro-Choice America has been the nation's leading advocate for privacy and a woman's right to choose. With more than one million members and supporters, NARAL Pro-Choice America is fighting to protect the pro-choice values of freedom and privacy. For NARAL Pro-Choice America, Sojourn Communications engaged our West Coast partner, The Health and Entertainment Group, to manage an outreach program designed to increase awareness of the complex issues of reproductive rights among television scriptwriters and producers.
Recognizing that family caregivers provide important societal and financial contributions toward maintaining the well-being of older Americans, the National Alliance for Caregiving was created to conduct research, develop national projects, and increase public awareness of the issues of family caregiving. On behalf of the National Alliance on Caregiving and the National Family Caregivers Association, Sojourn Communications coordinated a briefing for public relations professionals to educate them on caregiving research and how the research could inform their client work.
Founded in 1950, National Council on the Aging (NCOA) is a national network of organizations and individuals dedicated to improving the health and independence of older persons, increasing their continuing contributions to communities, society and future generations, and building caring communities. Sojourn Communications provided editorial oversight for the development of consumer-friendly fact sheets on aging and the elderly.
The National Family Caregivers Association is a grass roots organization created to educate, support, and empower the millions of Americans who care for chronically ill, aged, or disabled loved ones. On behalf of the National Family Caregivers Association and the National Alliance on Caregiving, Sojourn Communications coordinated a briefing for public relations professionals to educate them on caregiving research and how the research could inform their client work.
The National Family Planning and Reproductive Health Association (NFPRHA) is a vital membership organization representing the nation's dedicated family planning providers - nurses, nurse practioners, health center directors and other key healthcare providers. NFPRHA serves its members by providing advocacy, education and training for those in the family planning and reproductive healthcare field. In addition to designing and facilitating a team building and strategic planning retreat, Sojourn Communications helped NFPRHA develop and implement a comprehensive communications strategy.
The National PACE Association represents and works to advance the efforts of the more than 40 Programs of All-inclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE) across the United States. PACE programs coordinate and provide all needed preventive, primary, acute and long term care services so that older individuals can continue living in the community. Sojourn Communications worked with NPA to research target audiences, craft a compelling message platform, and develop a national communications plan.
As hospitals struggle with a growing nursing shortage, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) collaborates with leading healthcare and quality organizations to find effective solutions to problems of inadequate staffing and job satisfaction, healthcare quality, and patient safety. Sojourn Communications developed and implemented an overarching communications strategy for the RWJF nursing team.
Promoting Excellence in End-of-Life Care, a national program of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, provided $15 million in grants and technical support to innovative programs to change the face of dying in America. Sojourn worked with Promoting Excellence to produce a Capitol Hill briefing highlighting the state of end-of-life care.
Last Acts Partnership, was a national education and communications initiative dedicated to end-of-life care. As part of our partnership building strategy for Last Acts Partnership, Sojourn played a critical role in identifying and cultivating relationships with more than 1,200 organizations that shared goals common to the campaign. Additionally, Sojourn produced a weekly electronic newsletter for Last Acts Partnership delivered to more than 7,000 recipients and a monthly print newsletter reaching more than 10,000 subscribers. We also managed the development, marketing and distribution of nearly 20 products designed to educate consumers and providers about good end-of-life care.
